Branding and Social Media for Dorothy’s List

South Dakota should always feel like home. Dorothy’s List aims to bring informed accountability to corporate advocacy partnerships that create better futures for LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit South Dakotans.

Dorothy’s List is where you find businesses and organizations that have a proven track record of being LGBTQ+ friendly. Friends of Dorothy’s back up their support with policies and action. They offer more than just symbols of support, they act on it — and not just during Pride month.

WHAT I DID FOR DOROTHY’S LIST

  • Surveyed community members and leaders to set the vision and goals for Dorothy’s List

  • Met with local media outlets to share Dorothy’s story

  • Recruited support from over 100 businesses from across South Dakota in the first 30-days of launching

  • Collaborated with skilled designers to craft a color story, logo, and custom vinyl sticker

  • Publish regular pieces of content on social media to grow reach and expand engagement

Digital strategy and design work on the Jessica for South Dakota State Senate Campaign

As the digital marketing manager for Jessica Meyer’s Senate campaign, it was my duty to ensure every external message was on brand, timely, and recognizable. Each asset I produced matched Jessica’s effervescent personality in an effort to connect with her constituents virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHAT I DID FOR JESSICA

  • Leveraged paid and organic tactics to raise funds and created a recognizable brand to boost name recognition

  • Collaborated with volunteers to share stories from the campaign trail on social media

  • Regularly met with Jessica to set the tone for weekly content production and pitch opportunities to increase name recognition and participation in the campaign

Campaign Branding and Promotions

Even during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, South Dakota advocates were itching to get involved in local politics, but they weren’t quite sure how. The ACLU of South Dakota wanted to ensure folks were informed and prepared to fight for their civil rights and liberties so it established Advocacy Academy, a virtual training where attendees would learn the basics of organizing and campaigning, gain a foundational knowledge of conflict management strategies, figure out how to tell your story in an effective way, and learn how to put everything together for legislative advocacy.

This program was shared on YouTube and tailored to be promoted on priority social media accounts.

WHAT I DID FOR THE ACLU

  • Created the branding and visual theme for Advocacy Academy in consultation with the advocacy department

  • Published a digital and printer-friendly version of the official Advocacy Toolkit to support participants

  • Guided promotions of the campaign to reach audiences through various avenues such as social media, email, and in-person efforts with flyers and eared media

Videography

While I mostly deal in short form social media videos, I have also produced longer videos for stories that support campaign goals. See below!

ACLU of South Dakota Smart Justice Campaign

STORIES LIKE TERRY’S INSPIRE PEOPLE TO ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE

Imprisonment is a brutal and costly response to violations or possible violations that traumatizes incarcerated people and hurts families and communities. It should be the last option, not the first. Yet the U.S. incarcerates more people, in both absolute numbers and per capita, than any other nation in the world. Terry Liggins is sharing how being incarcerated has affected his life, his family and his career.

Terry hopes to use his story to help others.

Together we can improve South Dakota's criminal justice system by electing candidates who put people over prisons and vote smart justice.

Embracing humor and trends on social media

POLITICS ARE SERIOUS BUSINESS, BUT THAT DOESn’T MEAN WE CAN’T LAUGH A LITTLE ALONG THE WAY.

With help from tools like CapCut, Canva, and Adobe Premiere Pro, in addition to capitalizing on pivotal moments in pop culture, the ACLU was better able to connect with audiences through humorous, well-timed content that called out how absurd local politics can be while simultaneously reminding people how their voice can impact the process.
